Joint research efforts of a team of scientists at Lobachevsky University of Nizhny Novgorod (UNN) comprising chemists, physicists and engineers are currently focused on solving the problems of handling plutonium and minor actinides (MA) accumulated over many years. To this end, they are studying composite ceramics-ceramics (Cer-Cer) and ceramics-metal (CerMet) materials on the basis of mineral-like compounds (in particular, garnet minerals).

A team of researchers form Russia discovered that an increase in the concentration of several substances in oral fluid can serve as the indication of caries development. Using this data they found a way to prevent the disease in its early stages. The study was supported by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation (RSF). The results of the study were published in the EPMA Journal.

14 June 2018 г.

A team of scientists from the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Ural Federal University, Russia, including Piotr Galenko (head of the project), Ilya Starodumov, Irina Nizovtseva, Dmitry Aleksandrov, Aleksey Malygin and others is conducting a multiscale mathematical modelling of the Arctic ice evolution and determining its influence on the climate change. In 2016, the mathematicians received a grant from the Russian Science Foundation for fundamental research.

RSF Director General, Alexander Khlunov, Deputy Chairman of the RFBR, Vladimir Kvardakov, RFBR Director Oleg Belyavsky as well as the representatives of Moscow State University and Saint-Petersburg State University took part in the lively discussion moderated by DFG Secretary General Prof. Dorothee Dzwonnek.

The central theme of the conversation was the presentation of successful cooperation cases among DFG and different partners in Russia, such as the joint SRF-DFG call to support international research teams.

The RSF delegation chaired by General Director Alexander Khlunov held talks with the President of the Helmholtz Association, Otmar D. Wiestler, on June 1 in Berlin. "By the end of June, we will announce the results of our second joint call and in September we will release our third joint call focused on research of new materials and prospective physics. We are ready to expand our cooperation with the Helmholtz Association further in other thematic areas”, the head of the Russian delegation noted.

A team from Kirensky Institute of Physics (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) together with colleagues from Siberian Federal University offered an approach for the controlled synthesis of semiconducting higher manganese silicide thin films. The films may be used in thermoelectric converters and other devices. The team also suggested other areas of application for these materials. The results of the work were published in Journal of Materials Science.
