"Though this work is fundamental, we are working with the genes of the viruses, which can be used in design of vaccine against HIV. So to speak, it is necessary to create the vaccine not against all possible viruses, but against those which are transmitted and cause the infection. We will use these data in the further work on HIV vaccine development", notes Professor Kozlov

"It follows from numerous studies that changes in the photochemical reflectance index can be a promising indicator of photosynthetic stress in plants. Thus, the task of identifying the conditions under which PRI measurement is the most effective tool for assessing the photosynthetic processes in a plant is of a significant fundamental and practical importance," says Vladimir Sukhov, head of the Plant Electrophysiology Laboratory at the UNN Institute of Biology and Biomedicine.
"On the other hand, in the less favourable conditions for measuring the photochemical reflection index (measurement from the leaf surface, studies in sunlight), the significance of the distribution of photosynthetic parameters in plants for the effectiveness of PRI use increased considerably," Ekaterina Sukhova points out.
"On the whole, the obtained results are of great practical importance, since they help to understand the conditions under which the use of the photochemical reflectance index measurement for monitoring photosynthetic indices in plants (and hence their production process and stress) will be most effective," concludes Ekaterina Sukhova.

Researchers from the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI are developing radio-isotope beta-voltaic batteries with nickel-63 nano-cluster radio-isotope films. The concept is to develop safe nuclear batteries with a service life of 100 years for pacemakers, miniature glucose sensors, arterial blood pressure monitoring systems, and for controlling remote objects and micro-robots, and self-contained systems that can operate for a long time, according to the MEPhI press service. Research results are published in the journal Applied Physics Letters.
“It’s relatively easy to make an experimental system that consists of an array of densely packed nickel nano-clusters with the gradient distribution of nano-particles on the surface of silicon oxide, a broad-band dielectric, depending on their size,” he noted.

The new German-Russian funding program “Helmholtz-RSF Joint Research Groups” has completed its second selection phase, in which the Helmholtz Association and the Russian Science Foundation (RSF) selected a further six joint research groups. Each group will receive funding of up to 130,000 euros per year from the Helmholtz Association’s Initiative and Networking Fund as well as support in the same amount from RSF for a period of three years. The second of a total of three rounds of calls for proposals focused on the two fields of “Energy Storage and Grid Integration” and “Climate Research.” The first round in 2017 called for proposals in the fields of “Biomedicine” and “Information and Data Science.”
