The Starting Grants funding scheme benefits outstanding researchers of all ages and career stages who conduct independent cutting-edge, high-risk research throughout Russia. An RSF Starting Grant enables them to carry out their own impactful innovative research project with a dedicated small team of 2 to 4 researchers. The size of one Starting Grant is up to 1,5 million rubles annually.

A total of 6144 applications were submitted for the RSF Starting Grants in 2022. After evaluation process, the RSF selected 2017 applications for funding. The overall success rate is 32,8 %. Analysis of the success rates by gender reveals no significant differences. Remarkably, there are first grants going to the regions such as Dagestan, Buryatia, Chechnya and Yakutia usually underrepresented in terms of research funding by the RSF.
