The VYZOV Prize goes to RSF grantees

The VYZOV Prize is designed to recognize fundamental breakthroughs, ideas, and inventions that change the landscape of modern science and the life of every single person. In 2024, the laureates were announced on December 9.

The VYZOV Prize is awarded for science-intensive projects that have significant potential to change people's lives for the better and have a practical implementation horizon of up to 10 years. 

Prize is awarded in each of the five categories: Future, Engineering Solution, Breakthrough, Scientist of the year, and new international nomination Discovery. The laureates in each category will receive a 11,000,000 rubles prize. This year Scientific Committee received 594 applications. In four out of five categories, the award was given to RSF grant recipients.

Leonid Fershtat was awarded in the category “Perspective” for his advanced research in the field of creating organic functional materials for multi-purpose use based on high-nitrogen molecular architectures.

Sergey Taskaev, became a laureate in the category “Engineering Solution” for the development of a compact accelerator neutron source suitable for a wide range of research, including neutron capture therapy.

The winner in the “Breakthrough” category is Evgeny Antipov as well as Artem Abakumov. The scientists were awarded the prize for creating fundamental and practical foundations for the development and production of electrode materials for new-generation metal-ion batteries.

The Prize in “Discovery” category was awarded to Nikos Logothetis for his fundamental contribution to the creation of the functional magnetic resonance imaging method and its introduction into everyday scientific and clinical practice for studying human brain activity.

The Scientist of the Year, according to the decision of the Scientific Committee of the VYZOV Prize, was Valery Tuchin, for his outstanding contribution to the field of life sciences, as well as to the new interdisciplinary field of knowledge and technology - biophotonics.

The founder of the VYZOV Prize for Future Technologies is the Vyzov Foundation for the Development of Scientific and Cultural Relations in cooperation with Gazprombank, one of the largest financial institutions in Russia, and with support from the Moscow Government, Rosatom State Corporation, Roscongress Foundation.

In 2023, RSF grant recipients were also awarded. Pavlos Lagoudakis, Director of the Skoltech Hybrid Photonics Laboratory, was awarded in the “Breakthrough” nomination. Raul Gainetdinov, Director of the Institute of Translational Biomedicine at St. Petersburg State University, was awarded in the “Scientist of the Year” category.
